The Making of Armstrong Laminate
Armstrong Laminate flooring consists of four layers. The backing creates a moisture barrier that protects the flooring from warping. The inner core of the laminate is HydraCore or HydraCore Plus, which is a moisture resistant HDF (High Density Fiberboard). The HydraCore/HydraCore Plus core provides stability, durability, moisture resistance, and sound absorption. The next layer is the design layer. The design layer is a photographic image of wood, stone, brick, or ceramic. The top layer is the wear layer, which is a clear layer that protect the flooring from stains and fading.
The company uses Embossing in Register (EIR) to create the grain and texture consistent with the photographic image on the laminate planks. Embossing in Register intensifies the depth, texture, and natural look of the flooring. This manufacturing technique accentuates the design, especially when light hits the flooring. In addition, Embossing in Register allows for micro-grout lines and precise detailing. Most of the Armstrong laminate with a wood design has planks that are 4 inches or wider. The laminate that looks like ceramic tile range in size from 12 and 15 inches. The width of individual boards can have a dramatic influence on the look of the floor.
